The problem with giving up sweets is that it cuts out the main ingredient of an ICL lunch. The ICL lunch is essentially anything the vending machine sells - so basically crisps, sweets and cans. It is necessitated by the majority of practicals where you really don't have time to leave the lab for lunch. The sensible option would be to make a packed lunch and take it along to the lab, but this requires planning the night before or getting up early in the morning. This rarely happens. Thankfully the ICL lunch was not necessary today since we were finished the practical in about two hours. This does not bode well for the write up, since there is no such thing as an easy practical.

One the other hand, we had the fastest sign-off in the world this afternoon. We managed to get signed off by a Junior Demonstrator (i.e. a graduate employed by the lab to make sure we don't blow the lab up when the Senior Demonstrator is not around). Sign-offs can be a bit of a lottery - you either get a Senior Demonstrator to sign you off, in which case you generally get a few extra questions and comments on what you did wrong and why your straight line graph has a definite curve to it, or you go for a Junior Demonstrator in which case you could get a really easy sign off (if they can't be bothered/don't care/are not under the beady eye of a Senior Demonstrator) or a really long-winded, complicated and in-depth sign off. Today we were lucky, and the JD said 'Oh, I just have to check your numbers for this one, don't I?'. Cue vigorous nodding from two undergraduates. After about two minutes, we got that vital scribble and were out of the lab. Marvellous.

I feel really poor again - I suspect that the flu is returning. This is most unfair. Surely once a term is enough for anyone?
