The problem with an early night is that you have more time to get used to being in bed, and so it is much, much harder to get up again in the morning. The logic of this can be seen by noting that (a) if you never went to bed, you would have no problem getting up and (b) if you went to bed for five minutes, you would have relatively little difficulty getting back up and then working backwards. Eventually you must reach the point where you must spend your entire life in bed. I shall call this the Malpass Point. Presumably the exact position of this point must depend on local variables, since there could well be some extra impetus to stay in bed (tutorial work, monsters in the cupboard, etc.) and equally there could be some reasons to leave the bed (fire, flood, civil unrest, etc.). This could be the subject of extensive and careful research.

Today I came quite close to the Malpass Point, since all there was waiting for me was tutorial work and lectures. I got up anyway.
