earphones
Sara and I both got personal CD players from Argos to while away the time on our respective commutes.
The CD players are notable for the fact that their earphones have been designed by people without ears. Seriously. Although technically functional, you can't actually wear the things for much more than 15 minutes before your ears hurt. The sound wasn't exactly great either.
So, I cracked. I now own a pair of Sony MDR-EX71 earphones. And they're lovely, and very comfy. But they have just doubled the cost of the CD player.
They're more like earplugs (which happen to play music) than earphones. Great at cutting out traffic noise (and station announcements, alas), the sound-proofing also means you don't need the music so loud and you don't annoy your fellow commuters.
Rock on.
