total film

I bought a copy of Total Film to read on the train the other day. I haven't read a film magazine for a fair few years. In fact I haven't regularly read any magazines for a fair few years.

Total Film was fine - a decent mix of articles and reviews - but with one major flaw: for reasons best known to themselves, they ditched the perfectly good words "directed" and "director" with "helmed" and "helmer". Helmer? I mean, perhaps the odd use here and there to break the monotony, but their full search-and-replace dedication to house style really, really jarred after about the fifth use.

For all I know it's common parlance in film magazines. I do hope not.
